About Waikato Museum:

  • ·The Waikato Museum building won two awards from the New Zealand Institute of Architects: 1988 NZIA Waikato Branch Award and 1989 NZIA National Award.
  • ·Hamilton City and the surrounding districts were developed on the traditional lands of several of Waikato Tainui hapu. Below the area where this museum now stands there was a waka landing site that was called Te Korokoro.

  • ·Since the year 2000, Waikato Museum has hosted the National Contemporary Art Award. The award, held annually is curated by a new judge every year and culminates in an annual exhibition which documents a snapshot of New Zealand contemporary art.
