Curated in response to the development of the Hamilton Gardens’ newest ‘fantasy’ garden, the Surrealist Garden (due to open in February 2020), ‘The World is Large, Beautiful and Mostly Undiscovered’ is an exhibition celebrating all the best and weird parts of 1920s surrealism.

Dinosaur rEvolution Secrets of Survival
7 March – 14 June 2020

Dinosaurs were on top of the world for 169 million years then vanished 65 million years ago, but did they all go extinct? The kids are going to love this hands-on exhibit! See the fascinating skeletons and touch the fossil casts including a nest of dinosaur eggs, and unearth fossils from dig pits. Three animatronic dinosaurs will sense you approach, hear their mighty roar and watch them move.

Waro Mutu: The End of Coal
14 March – 28 June 2020


See the progression of the North Waikato mining township of Rotowaro by photographer, David Cook. His photo series began in 1984, when the Waikato Museum commissioned him to document the impact of the coal industry. Cook then immersed himself in the town and began documenting over the last four decades, witnessing the expansion of the mine and consequent demolition of the entire settlement. After 100 years of nonstop coal extraction, the mine was then closed and the land rehabilitated as pasture, forestry and lakes.  This moving image work showcases the tangata whenua perspectives on the significance of this land in light of economic, ecological and cultural histories.
